SS assignment (1)
Question chosen: blog about problems that the government face and should tackle e.g. elitism in singapore

''Despite having gone through national education at school, 37 percent of Singaporean youths say they are not patriotic. In fact, more than half want to migrate overseas if given a chance. Indian youths are the most ready to migrate, at 67 percent, compared to 60 percent of Malays and 49 percent of Chinese. 'After coming back from travelling, they find that other countries have much more to offer than Singapore, which is very boring,' says one youth.'' An extract of an article by Pearl Forss, Channel NewsAsia

The Singapore government is currently facing problems such as the worrying issue of an increasing number of Singaporeans migrating overseas. This is especially so for young singaporeans.

Recently, the news reported that one-third of young Singaporeans say that they don't love Singapore and when the suitable time comes, they will migrate to other countries.

In Japan, that is the case where many young japanese people migrate overseas and leave the old japanese people in japan. The main reason that the young people in Singapore are migrating is that they don't feel a sense of belonging to singapore. As shown above in the extract, 37% of singaporean youths say that they are not patriotic. One reason is that the pressure of school work is getting stronger and stronger, which results in people having less time to get to know their neighbours and to get involved in neighbourhood activities.

Another reason is that as many foreign talents are being recuited into singapore, they are more favoured by employers than singaporeans which make the citizens feel like they are second-class.
The wages of Singaporeans are also low compared to other developed countries.

Therefore I feel that the government should tackle this impending problem. A solution is to build up the community and neighbourhood spirit. This will help in bonding the singaporean youths to the community and build up relationships.

The second solution is to create build close relationships within each family. As family is the basic foundation of society, close
family ties is important. Parents should spend more family time with their children and spouses. They can also expose and educate their children to the culture and traditions of singapore so as to let their children understand singapore better (e.g. during chinese new year, why should red be worn, etc). This would create in the children a sense of belonging to Singapore.

Parent can also tell their children about Singapore's achievements so that their children will feel proud to be a Singaporean. Their children would eventually grow to love Singapore too.

In conclusion, I feel that this is a problem that the government should tackle as it concerns the future of Singapore.
